Kakegurui (Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler)

Category A

This anime passes criterion the first three criteria in episode 1. The conversations are frequent and non-trivial!

  1. Are there two named female characters?
  2. Who have a conversation?
  3. Not about men?
  4. Does this happen frequently?
  5. Is the conversation non-trivial?

I don’t really know how to feel about this show. On the one hand, the over-sexualisation is pretty off-putting. I don’t know about you but my hobbies don’t include watching all the female characters drooling immensely while they orgasm. On the other hand, this passes the Bechdel test easily, the females are definitely what drives this show, so how could it not? The characters are also all very non-standard. I’m pretty tired of the scant few female stereotypes that usually appear in anime (the cute loli, the forever surprised chaste girl and the badass warrior), so it’s nice to see something so different. I guess, good job, weird show?

Classic. Can shoujo get better than this? Again, two female protagonists = Bechdel win. There is also plenty of drama, love, hate, sex and rock and roll. You end up loving and hating all the characters for their mistakes and great moments.

This show is insane. I love it. Since both the protagonists are female, it passes almost immediately and continues piling on the female – female interaction every episode. The story is engaging and tense. Plenty of action and motorcycle chases. Now that this exists, we can stop with all the bullshit right? Women can be just as entertaining, violent and crazy as guys can be.

This show is just awesome. If you haven’t watched it yet, go do so now. It passes easily, from the very beginning to the very end, though to be fair, it’s much easier when the protagonist is female. This result was to be expected of the author of Seirei no Moribito, which is also a great show, with very influential female characters. Go, Nahoko Uehashi!

This show wasn’t too bad. It probably could have been 1 season long instead of 2 though. It passes the test pretty comfortably as there are many women important to the story’s progression here. Even the villain is a female. Good going!

As a show with only one a few male characters of any importance, this should have passed easily. It did. What a relief. While a bit too cute for my tastes, it was not cute in an overly pandering way. With a pretty simple plot, this show entertained me well enough.

Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro (Neuro: Supernatural Detective)

This anime passed all of the criteria 1-5 in its second episode.

  1. Are there two named female characters?
  2. Who have a conversation?
  3. Not about men?
  4. Does this happen frequently?
  5. Is the conversation non-trivial?

This was somewhat surprising, as even shows with female leads often fail this test. This seemed like a somewhat standard shounen, written by a man, but there were so many female criminals!!! It was great.
