This anime passes the first criterion in episode 1, the second and third criterion in episode 13. The conversations are not frequent or non-trivial though.
  1. Are there two named female characters?
  2. Who have a conversation?
  3. Not about men?
  4. Does this happen frequently?
  5. Is the conversation non-trivial?

This show did some interesting things with gender roles. The protagonists don’t at all  fit into the gender roles the dancing community in the show champions. Chii-chan leads and Tatara follows. They show how Chii-chan hates trying to follow Tatara’s inept lead and rightly thinks she is better at it. At the same time the show really tries to sell ‘taming the shrew’ as not such a bad thing. They do end up working together more than taming Chii-chan in the end, but it still wasn’t what I wanted. Anime doesn’t have to be realistic, why not have them flip the roles and show us their struggles as they try to convince the dancing community that tradition isn’t the most important thing. At least Sengoku and Chizuru brawl to settle their differences, in very equal fashion.
